James looked over at Grace as she rode next to him. He noticed she was wearing the same clothes as yesterday, but they had been well brushed and pressed.

“Would ye like to go past the dressmaker in the village?” he asked Grace.

At his words, she looked down at her skirts and touched them, saying, “Och, and I tried so hard to hide the fact I’m in sore need of new clothes, James. But when a man notices a lass needs clean robes, then it’s most definitely time to get them!”

He smiled. “Nay, ye look fine, lass. Dinnae set yerself in a spin. I only noticed because I was looking. Ye’re wearing the same clothes as afore, and even though I’m a man, I ken enough about the likes of ye to suggest we make a pass by the dressmaker.”

Unlike before, when he had accused her of not appreciating where her food came from, Grace took no offense at his words this time.

“As much as I find yer offer very tempting, James, I must refuse. I have a more urgent need to get over the hill and watch those carts and wagons arriving at the garrison.”

He bent down and reached out toward her. She knew what he wanted and placed her hand in his. They rode on like that for a while, then James said, “When we return, I’ll send word to the dressmaker and ask her to attend to ye. Would ye like that?”

From the way Grace looked up at him and squeezed his hand, he knew that she would enjoy that very much.

The journey to the overlook for the garrison afforded them a lovely spot to stop and break their fast. James spread a plaid over the grass, and they enjoyed some of the bread and cheese from his saddlebags.

“We could have just munched on a bannock in the saddle,” Grace observed.

“Aye, but then I would nae have had the chance to do this.” James leaned back against the tree trunk behind him and patted the ground beside him, a tempting smile on his face. “Come and lie down a wee while.”

Grace laughed and shook her head. She got up and began knocking the crumbs off her skirts, saying, “Och awa’ wi’ ye, James. I ken well enough nae to let ye lure me into falling back asleep next to ye. Whatever will any passing shepherd say if they were to see us?”

James laughed and stood up. “The lad would say anything I told him to. I’ve grown up with every shepherd and cowherd ‘round these parts, Grace, and if they have forgotten the days when I covered for them breaking a window, I certainly have nae.”
